Carmel Kallemaa from Barrie brought home a bronze medal from the Pan American Championships.

It was Carmel’s fourth time participating as an individual gymnast at such a big event representing Canada. This year the competition was even more important. The biggest goal was to qualify for the world championships, which is one of the Olympic qualifiers for Paris 2024.

Team Canada finished the competition third after Brazil and the United States. Team Canada secured spots for the world championships in August in Spain and to the Pan American Games in November in Chile.

Carmel is very happy with the results. She said that now she will continue working and she is really hoping that her home club, Glimmer Athletic Club, will find a home gym in Barrie so that she doesn’t have to drive to Toronto for training every day. Right now Carmel trains mostly in Toronto with Team Canada and Team Glimmer.

“We still have lots of work to do,” said Carmel’s mom and personal coach, Janika Moelder. “With the help of international and Team Canada coaches we worked out a plan for preparation for the next competitions.”

Before world championships, Carmel will participate at the World Cup in Italy and will have training camps, moving forward step by step to achieve her goals.
